Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Does this work on all wood?
A: Answer
Q: I have small dime sized holes in my wood, do I need to fill them before painting?
A: You are likely victim to the teamwork of carpenter bees and woodpeckers. Carpenter bees bore tunnels into soft or untreated wood in order to create a nest to feed their young. They lay their eggs in individual chambers making it hard for other predators to get to their young. Most birds will not go after carpenter bees, but birds such as the woodpecker are adapted perfectly to do so. The bees make a nest and then the woodpeckers come after and drill large holes into the wood to get at them. These holes will allow water to enter and get trapped in the wood and if left alone this will rot out the wood entirely. In these cases you must either use treated wood or swap to PVC or any other composite material in order to prevent the bees from making a nest in the first place. Do not forget that treated wood needs to fully dry out before you can paint it. (See below)
Q: How long do I have to wait to paint pressure treated wood?
A: The time it takes to dry out changes vastly from climate to climate so most manufacturers will recommend that you wait a full calendar year; however, there is a simple test to tell if your treated wood is ready to be painted. Simply sprinkle water along the wood and look to see if it soaks in. If the water beads on top then your pressure treated wood isn’t ready to be painted yet, but if it soaks in then Perma-bond Primer will soak in as well.
Q: Can I use this any time of the year?
A: There are three things to keep in mind before applying any Permalast product: humidity, temperature and weather. The higher the humidity, the longer it will take to dry and vice versa. Permalast coating systems will fail if applied at temperatures above 90 degrees Fahrenheit and below temperatures of 35 degrees Fahrenheit during the curing process. It is vital to check the weather in advance so that you know if there’s a chance for rain/snow, whether the humidity changes drastically throughout the day and most important of all is to make sure it does not drop below 35 degrees Fahrenheit at night or go above 90 during the hottest period of the day. As long as you keep these things in mind and plan thoroughly, you can use Permalast products year round.
Q: How long should I expect a coating to last?
A: We offer a 30 year warranty on all our products because we know they will stand the test of time! You may notice the original color change slightly over time, with regular power washing and routine maintenance (such as repairing any damage to the wood itself) you’ll see that it shall not crack, peel, blister, flake, or corrode.
